Exit: pursued by a bear count political and social satirists and expositors of sin, William Langland and Dante Alighieri as influences as well as the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth, James Joyless and other handsome radicals. The music, which began as a direct response to a series of uncomfortable silences and lulls in conversation has become the soundtrack to an investigation of the human condition. Every time the group meets it feels like a landmark in thinking, let alone music. Exit: pursued by a bear ring their collective tongue around the circumference of human experience, cleansing the anima and drowning the persona. The group has attracted interest from A and R people (Amish and Rastafarians) from both home and abroad, but is presently cautious about erecting any specific cultural or religious flag to their metaphorical mast. In short, the group is not quite ready to lay themselves bare. “One of the stars of the recent Cork Rocks series of showcases, Leeside five-piece exit: pursued by a bear sound, of all things, like Mogwai jamming with the Waterboys. With songs that flit from soft acoustic moments to thunderous post-rock, they take the quiet/loud formula to intriguing new vistas. Like the Spice Girls, the band's members have assumed 'amusing' monikers; say hello to Papa Bear, Stern Bear, Boozy Bear, Born again Bear and Baby [cynical] bear. Unlike the Spice Girls, their songs have a tendency to creep under the listener's skin. John Walsh – Hot Press “Anyone who witnessed Exit: Pursued by a Bear’s extraordinary performance at the recent IMRO Showcase saw the band jump into hyperspace. It was their most fluid realisation of their sound yet. Don O'Mahony - Cork Evening Echo "Exit: pursued by a bear are also an exciting proposition in a landscape dominated by standard guitar, bass and drums and are in the process of forging something unique" Don O'Mahony - Cork Evening Echo “Subtle electronic flourishes pulsing over the more delicate side of indie post rock shenanigans ala Rock Action era Mogwai Graham Lynch - The Cork Independent “The softly skittering, hard panned glitch beats, and plaintive Do Say Make Think like guitars that usher in Exit: Pursued by a Bear’s latest EP, Procession, mark a definite progression for the cork outfit Graham Lynch - The Cork Independent Procession E.P. was launched on 3rd March 2006 in An Cruiscin Lan, Douglas Street, Cork, to a packed house.
